We had a fabulous time! All communications and information associated with Morocco Tours were excellent from our initial query to our drop-off at the airport; very responsive to every question. The comments that follow are a combo of thoughts Sally and I shared while others are my own, not having discussed them.
Highlights: It’s difficult to choose, there were so many. One of the biggest highlights was the care and concern shown for Sally’s brief illness by in-county MT rep Jill and our driver. They both visited and offered to assist in any way, adjusting their schedules accordingly.
I also appreciated our local tour guides’ expertise while sharing their history, culture, sense of humor, and command of the English language. We always felt we were in good hands and that everyone involved with Morocco Tours cared about our having an enjoyable and safe experience. Not surprisingly, we chatted with other MT clients along the way and all agreed the company provides a top-notch experience. We did love the relaxing day off at beautiful L’Ma Lodge in Skoura.
Zak was an excellent driver and always made sure we were delivered into the hands of each proprietor or tour guide before departing. His English is very good as well and he always laid out a time frame for pick-up in the morning or whatever event we were engaged in. We enjoyed his sharing information about Moroccan culture as well as his sense of humor. He also went out of the way to include activities not mentioned in the itinerary like a visit to Ouarzazate/Atlas Studios, an authentic Damascene Rose distillery/cosmetics souk, and V’al D’argan winery for lunch.
Wonderful images from our trip still pervade my early waking and fragrances of orange, jasmine, gardenia oils take me to the same place during the day. We’re thoroughly glad we found Morocco Tours and I’ve recommended it to at least 5 people already.
But Sally knows it’s in my nature to offer suggestions for enhancement, so here are a few to consider:
From the tour beginning, ask drivers to give customers a choices/choices for “lunch on our own” and “dinner on our own” or to inquire if there’s a place customers have researched/know about. Every meal was laden with food and it became too way much. Toward the end I realized I simply needed to request “street food” for lunch and was super happy when that came about, regretting I hadn’t asked sooner. Same for dinner: I would’ve liked to have had options presented to us rather than being directed to a place that we might not have chosen on our own. Finally, on our last night we found a place for dinner on our own but felt that it was an inconvenience/hassle for payment for our driver?
We didn’t care for Riad Madu: the double bed was on an elevated concrete platform requiring a step down to the floor and then a step up to the restroom, both difficult to navigate at night. The twin beds were rock hard plus there was no pool option as described in our itinerary?
I would’ve liked to have had the option to spend a bit more time in the desert at Jaimas Madu tent camp. That day we had listened to local musicians and toured around Rissani, meeting our 4×4 driver around 4:00 p.m.. That didn’t leave much time to enjoy the silence of the desert before dinner and the camel ride at sunset. Perhaps advise drivers to discuss with customers the night before or in the morning the customer’s desired arrival time at their lodging. From there the driver could suggest/plan/adjust time spent at various locations accordingly…without getting neurotic about it. Frequently we would’ve liked to have arrived earlier at our lodging to rest and eat earlier.
While Todra Gorge geology is impressive, the throngs of tour buses and tour groups is something I could’ve taken in quickly from a distance then moved on rather than dodging traffic as we walked up the road. I had anticipated and would’ve enjoyed more time hiking in a natural area instead though the hour or so time we had with the local guide along an ancient irrigation ditch, creek, and family ag plots was interesting.
On our chosen day off in Marrakesh, we visited Ben Joussef Madrassa and were delighted to be reimbursed by Zak for the entrance fees. That made me wonder if the visit was supposed to have been included in the guided tour the day before.
I’m still sorting through my zillion photos and have uploaded many as links in Google Photos, not helpful unless one uses gmail. I’ll send some in the next few days.
Thanks again to you, Bethany, Jill, and Zak: a dynamo team!
