First let me state that, in my opinion, our driver Rachid, was simply exceptional and deserves an A+. At all times, he displayed remarkable driving abilities: unwavering attention span, anticipation of other drivers behavior, courtesy, assertiveness when necessary and attentiveness of the mood of his passengers. He was always prompt, actually always early, for our appointments. He was always friendly, courteous and patient with us, even when we changed the planning, and protective of us when circumstances dictated, like when we aggravated some people by taking pictures they did not want us to take. Obviously, his trilingual abilities were an asset. He did his best to teach us some Arabic and to introduce us to Arabic culture and traditions. He was a true ambassador for his country and his people. Please give him our thanks again, as he was instrumental in making our trip safe, enjoyable and memorable.
This was a memorable trip by many accounts, and as all vacations go, it had some highs and some lows. The highs for us were many: Chefchaouen, Fes, Marrakesh, Volubilis… the donkeys, goats and cats in the streets…. the people, the architecture, the small streets and alleys, the life style, the food… the Riad in Fes and the Maison Arabe in Marrakech were truly magnificent. The location, architecture, service, staff and food in both places were simply outstanding. The small hotel in Chefchaouen was great also. The guides in each city were also extremely helpful and educational and provided us with many insights into the history and local customs.
In retrospect, there are a few things that I would have done differently. First I would have, should have, studied about Morocco’s history, culture and languages before the trip. This would have made it a richer more rewarding experience. I used to do this before most of our trips abroad, and failed to this time and now regret it. I would also have asked for more culture, museums, adventure, more walking, less driving, even more local flavors, and less “mercantile”, showrooms, and “things to buy” stops. I also realize that most Americans do like “shopping” while on trips, in that regard I guess I am more French.
In summary, we absolutely loved the trip and the experience. It exceeded our expectations at all levels. We will definitely recommend it to our friends and family. Thank you for all your work in preparation, planning and follow through. Please transmit our warm regards to Rachid.
