We completed our 1 month trip to Morocco at the end of April which we had been contemplating for some time . Certainly, the highlight of our trip was the 9 day guided tour throughout much of the country . We would definitely recommend a guide as you could go exploring on your own but you wouldn’t really understand the history of what you were seeing.
Our guide, Hamid, was excellent (the very BEST
) in explaining everything and allowing the right amount of time for us to enjoy each destination. We travelled in a modern, large Mercedes van which was roomy & very comfortable. There are many options as to what you would like to do so that one can customize their trip according to their own interests. The Riads ( hotels with an open courtyard ) were first class and their the hosts & hostesses were very gracious and helpful . The breakfasts & dinners included @ the Riads were quite enjoyable and again, the service was excellent . Moroccan food isn’t spicy in general but different enough to be quite interesting . At the “ginormous” souk in Marrakech, we bought leather jackets where they were made as well as some ceramics and spices. Again, our guide was so helpful in taking us to the actual warehouses where the merchandise was being produced & showing us a wide variety of “made in Morocco” goods.
After our tour, we spent several weeks on our own and golfed six times on courses around Marrakech. Taxis are very inexpensive and food can be one half to one third of the price compared to North American restaurants. You could tell the average person wished you well and we certainly felt safe everywhere.
