The trip was spectacular! The properties were lovely—I have never stayed in a place as ‘fancy’ as the Maison Arabe in Marrakech. I was wowed with Riad Myra in Fes…and then the 5* put them to shame! (not really, of course, but you were right—one can see a difference). The Erfoud Xaluca was another lovely hotel, but lacked some organization. The Tented camp had only two couples in it the night we were there, so essentially, half the camp was ours and that made it feel that much more exclusive and luxurious! The next night the camp was expecting 22 guests—so we timed that one right! The Berbere Palace had issues out of their control—most of the city had only intermittent electricity while we were there, so no charging phones/cameras/internet, etc. Hotel Le Doge was very comfortable, but the most ‘rigid’ wanting credit card imprints and all of that at check-in—they were the only property to require that additional hoop.
We enjoyed being able to eat a couple nights at outside restaurants. The one is Fes was wonderful. The one in Marrakech was so-so. I just kept staring at the menu waiting for something to ‘grab me’, but it never did. However, the special dessert of chocolate cake layered with dark chocolate mousse covered with chocolate shavings back at Maison Arabe and Happy Birthday sang in English, French, and Arabic was most memorable. Those folks can cook and bake there, that’s for sure!!!
All guides were very good. Our Fes guide always stuck pretty close to us and provided excellent information. The Volubilis guide was excellent and could answer any question we threw at him. The Marrakech guide was particularly knowledgeable with history and I guess I would say the politics of the area over time. The sales aspect of the guides was the only negative associated with them.
Our driver, Ahmed, was very professional and informative. About half of our informational conversations were initiated by him and the other half by us. He was great about helping us with getting a sim card and topping up our phone. I really only have positive that I can say about Ahmed. Two thumbs up! Also, his (Mercedes) vehicle was clean and he was always offering to share any purchases of fresh fruit or nuts he purchased along the way. Though we offered to him the ability to stop whenever he wanted to for prayer, he never did and worked that in to our scheduled stops.
Did I mention that we LOVED our cooking class? That was great fun and was a highlight (after the camel ride and night in the desert, of course!) Really, the whole experience was great and I have been singing your praises since our return. From first contact to the trip completion…it was grand!
I am happy to write a testimonial. We were nothing but pleased! We found everything just wonderful and memorable! Every km we traveled, the scenery kept my attention. Just such a beautiful country!! Warm, friendly, lovely people.
Thank you for all of your help in helping to make the half-century mark for me most memorable!
Warmly and with appreciation,
