Our trip was wonderful. Namir is an extraordinary person and took care of us and our every need, request and desire without even being asked. He made the trip memorable in every respect. He educated us to the history, geography, politics and culture of the region in a thoughtful and unbiased manner. He was a very careful and conscientious driver. He is just an all-around good guy and we’d like to count him as our friend.

The trip itself was exactly as described in the printed material and we were very satisfied with it. Certainly we would be glad to recommend the trip, Morocco Tours/ExperienceIt! Tours to others.

Thanks to Kit and Ruth for all your hand-holding leading up to our travel. We appreciate it.

Morocco totally exceeded our expectations. It is a feast for all the senses. It is a nation of proud, genuinely friendly and (except for motorbike drivers) very courteous people. It’s landscapes are varied and spectacularly beautiful—from coastal blue waters and white beaches, and rich, irrigated farmlands, and ubiquitous date plantations … picturesque villages, snow-capped mountains, rocky gorges, and Sahara dessert sand dunes. Morocco is a country of walled cities—not just its oldest (imperial) capitols like Fez, Mecknes, Marrakech, but also many smaller towns known as kasbahs—which are mostly enclosed within 20-40-foot-high stone or adobe walls. Approaching them is like entering a time machine and going back 6-15 centuries. To meander within each city is like peeling an onion layer-by-layer to discover a bustling medina (marketplace) of meandering alleys containing dozens of workshops, hundreds of stalls selling thousands of food or artisan products, plus several mosques, a beautiful medersa (religious school), and dozens of 2-3 story palaces of former nobility whose plain exterior walls give no hint of the awesome beauty of their interior courtyards or gardens, each with elaborate tiled or mosaic floors and walls, and cedar ceilings, doors, windows, and balconies intricately carved and/or painted with exquisitely complex Muslim geometric patterns. Many of these homes—known as riads—have been converted into bread-and-breakfast facilities, and we lodged in several. Then, outside each walled city is a ville nouvelle built by the occupying French half a century ago (aprox. 1906-1956), mostly in the art deco styles of pre-World War II. In addition, one encounters majestic palaces and gardens—some inside some outside the walls—of different dynastic kings who have each held sway for hundreds of years prior to and following the French. And if all this were not beautiful or historic enough, we were treated to a tour of the ruins of Volubilis, a Roman City of circa 300 AD with extant columns, walls, olive presses, irrigation and plumbing systems, forum, altars, courtyards, and even floor mosaics honoring the Gods.

Noteworthy too was (1) our camel ride in the Sahara to observe a dessert sunset, which included an overnight in a Berber tent (Berbers are among the oldest nomads on the planet) with local food (dinner and breakfast) and Berber music and dancing; (2) our overlap in the desert with an auto rally of 1,200 French mini-Renaults throwing up dust clouds as far as ten miles away; (3) in Maadedd, our visit to a modest Berber family’s 3-story home—a lesson in what you can do with adobe to shelter three generations of family plus a dozen sheep in the middle of a 700-year-old kasbah with a population of 10,000 inhabitants; (4) buying 600 million-year-old fossilized mollusks; (5) having a coke at the Gladiator Bar in Quarzazate, where dozens of historical movies were filmed—Ben Hur, Ten Commandments, Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, etc., etc.; (6) crossing the Atlas Mountains in snow at 10,000 feet above sea level; (7) visiting the exquisitely beautiful Jardin Majorelle in Marakesh, a lush overwhelming of the senses; and in Casablanca (8) the exquisite Hassan II mosque, newest and largest in the Muslim World; (9) the site of the Casablanca Conference, where the D-day invasion of Europe was planned by Churchill, FDR, DeGaulle, etc.; (10) the 2-mile corniche (beach road), playland of both local and European youth as well as Middle Eastern princes; and (11) two delicious dinners at “Rick’s Café”, a monument to the Bogart movie Casablanca.

Morocca’s cuisine is fabulous—served in ceramic steam-cooker dishes known as tagines. I pigged out on lamb, but chicken, beef, fish, and vegetarian options were delectable as well. Morocco’s breads are to die for–fresh, crunchy, and tasty. Fresh olives, almonds and dried fruit (dates and apricots) are ubiquitous. Most Muslims don’t drink alcohol, but for tourists modestly-priced, high-quality wine and adequate quality beer was still available in most restaurants we visited. I traveled with my own plastic flask of gin for nightcaps.

Our driver, Younes Lafhal, was superb. Considering that Morocco is a country of tail-gaters, Younes demonstrated lightning-fast reflexes as well as prudence in velocity and passing. More importantly, over ten days he answered hundreds of our questions, including matters relating to his family, religion, politics, customs, agriculture, history, sports, and philosophy of life. He was always punctual, good-humored, patient, and helpful. His recommenda- tions for restaurants, local guides, and tourist attractions were most satisfactory. He also saved the day many times as an emergency translator, He speaks remarkably good English.

Thank you,

John, March 2012

It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience! We hope to return to Morocco in the future, a country that surprised us with its beauty, rich history, delicious food, and welcoming people (as long as Jamal is our driver again, of course). We especially appreciated the flexibility and professionalism of the Morocco Tours/ExperienceIt! Tours staff in helping organize our trip. At each step of the way, we felt very well taken care of, and would go to bed each night excited about the next day’s adventures. We also want to place a special emphasis on Jamal, who was a fantastic driver. His youthful, fun demeanor combined with his attention to detail and commitment to safe driving put as at ease and allowed us to relish the experience even more.

The highlight was certainly our stay in the Sahara on the Berber New Year, which also coincided with Marilyn’s birthday! It was quite simply an unforgettable night of good food (including Marilyn’s sand cake!), drum music, laughter, and breathtaking stars.

We will gladly refer any of our friends or relatives considering a trip to Morocco to Morocco Tours/ExperienceIt! Tours!

All four of our party enjoyed the trip immensely. The Royal Mansour in Casablanca was a great start, an elegant hotel. Our special birding trip to the Merdja Zerga was great for birders like me and a pleasant outing for the others who are non-birding nature lovers. Our guide, Hassan Dalil was excellent and had all the necessary equipment: binoculars, telescope, and bird books. I got quite a few new birds for my Life List. Chefchaouen was very pleasing. It is very pretty and much less crowded than the larger cities and so provides a gentle introduction to the exotic sights and sounds of Morocco, especially for the younger travellers who hadn’t strayed from North America very much.

Volubilis and Meknes were impressive and Fes really interesting. It was like stepping back 500 years and I shot some great movie clips of pots thrown on a kick-wheel, metalworkers hammering copper and silver articles, wool being dyed, cloth being manufactured on ancient looms, rugs being hand knotted, and so on. The ladies brought back a good sampling of these hand-made articles too. Although the Medina was very different than anything we had previously experienced, we felt quite safe and comfortable. We were most impressed by the traditional decoration of the Medersas; the tilework, calligraphy, stucco and carved cedar is wonderful.

In Erfoud, our visit to the Kasbah and Palmery were a highlight as was the visit to the home of Bashir the “movie star”. Riding the camels, watching the sunset and camping in our luxury tents was fun too, if a bit cold. Betty and I have lived in the mountains on a couple of occasions, so the Todra and Dades Gorges were not particularly impressive but we enjoyed the outings. I went walking in Ouarzazate and found myself in some back alleys, but still I felt quite safe and all the locals I met were extremely polite and friendly. The most uncomfortable part of the trip was the over-stuffed feeling after dinner at the Berber Palace; I have never been presented with so much food at a restaurant and it was so good that didn’t want to waste a tiny bit.

Marrakech and Essaouira were a fine finish to a great trip, even if the argan oil is cheaper at the airport than at the ladies’ co-op. The Djemaa el-Fna was particularly interesting. The Majorelle Gardens were a bit crowded, in fact that was the only place we encountered tourists in any numbers.

Youssef Maamri is an excellent guide and an excellent driver. He presents his country and his culture very well and his explanations of Morocco’s history gave us a really good understanding of the sights that we saw (as much as one can expect of a two week trip). Youssef took us places in the medinas of Fes and Marrakech that we would not have found by ourselves in months and provided some very interesting and unique opportunities for shopping. We came away with carpets, ceramics, fossils, leather goods, hand-made cloth, clothing, argan products, and thousands of pictures!

We could not have asked for a more diverse country to explore, ranging from bustling city to tiny town to farmland, from modern buildings and hotels to medinas, adobe homes, kasbahs and riads, and from snow covered mountains to a barren desert of sand dunes to the Atlantic Ocean. We even stopped at a little town called Ifrane that looked like a Swiss village. Who would have expected that?

For us, the wonderfully photogenic Chefchaouen probably best qualifies as our most memorable experience in Morocco, with the huge Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, the authentic souk in Rissani, and the Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou outside Ouarzazate tied for second. And of course, no trip to Morocco is complete without a camel ride into the Sahara. We found the medina in Fes particularly fascinating, but we didn’t care that much for the market, the hagglers, and all the mini bikes zooming around in Marrakesh. It made us wonder if it might have made more sense to schedule the trip backward, saving the best for last.

As nice as the hotels were, we enjoyed the times we stayed in riads. They tend to be cold in the winter, even with the heaters going full blast, but they truly gave us a feel for how the people, at least those more well-to-do, used to live. One of the most interesting things we learned about the Moroccan culture is their preference to keep their home exteriors simple and uninviting while the hidden interiors are beautifully finished and furnished.. We also enjoyed the excellent authentic meals served in the riads even more than the buffets at the hotel.

I must add that the weather cooperated throughout our entire trip. We’d been warned that January was the rainy season, but except for a snowfall crossing the Lower Atlas Mountains en route to Erfoud, we had absolutely gorgeous weather with bright blue skies that were ideal for photography. Admittedly, it was quite chilly at times, and that may be the main reason that January is their winter low season, but I think we made a great choice of times to visit Morocco.

Rostom was excellent – always on time, upbeat, entertaining, and helpful. We never felt nervous with him driving, even when we crossed the High Atlas Mountains with steep drop-offs along the side. He was very attentive to our well being and went out of his way to please us in any way he could. He arranged for top notch local guides who were knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and added his own perspectives while we were traveling. Though not on our official itinerary, he also took us to Rissani on the morning before we drove into the desert, and since we’re very interested in experiencing local culture, that proved to be one of our most interesting stops.

This note wouldn’t be complete without thanking Kit, Ruth, and the rest of the Morocco Tours staff for putting together a well organized trip that went pretty much flawlessly. It was great to be able to speak to Kit on the telephone before we left to clarify the few questions we had after looking through your thorough pre-trip package. And we sure are glad you warned us to bring our heavy coats!

We found Morocco Tours a pleasure to deal with – efficient, helpful, responsive. We absolutely would recommend it to friends (in fact have already done so!).

One of the things we liked about our trip was meeting other people in our riads. We got quite friendly with some of your other clients, and shared meals and conversations with them. It sometimes seemed almost wasteful that we were going the same places in two separate cars, though we understand that people are getting “private” tours, so from that point of view it makes sense! We all agreed the trip to the desert was a peak experience.

Overall, the trip was really great. If there is one thing we would do differently for us, it would be to make sure we had more walking time. We really did spend a lot of time in the car. Since we had such a conscientious driver, there were times we could quite easily have walked someplace, but were driven – and of course we didn’t realize til afterwards how close we really were to our destination. We are more used to walking when we travel, and find it easier to get oriented that way. But really this is a small thing. We had an absolutely marvelous trip – definitely one of the best vacations we have ever had.

Many thanks to you and to everyone at Morocco Tours for your good work!

I had a great time in Morocco. Morocco has become one of my favorite trips, not just because of the country but also because of the people I encountered. I loved all the hotels/riads except for the first one. I was disappointed with the Royal Mansour. The food was fine, it was the accommodations that were not so great. Every other place we stayed we would stay again. You could not select a better driver if you tried. He made the trip a wonderful memory for all of us. Memories of this trip will last a long time, but memories of Khalid will last my lifetime. He did everything he could to assist me when my daughter needed help.

Favorite activities: staying out in the Sahara Desert (the night sky is
something I never get to see with Denver’s ambient light) and my cooking
class. I went food shopping (artichokes! yum) and ate the dinner I
fixed on top of the cafe with sunshine and a view–can’t get better than
that!

Favorite stop: Volubilis! The mosaics were beautiful and so well
preserved and the setting was perfect.

I would tell people to bring twice the amount of money to Morocco to shop with. I
thought I had brought enough but in the end I had to use my credit
card.

Thanks for all the help in assisting us with the plane ride home. I am
not sure we would have been able to work out a solution. All of us were
so impressed that we received four calls inside of one hour telling us
the problem was being worked on. One from the US, two from Morocco and
one from Libya. Thanks for all your hard work.

Thanks again for a wonderful trip. I am looking at Libya…

I was absolutely delighted with the entire trip. Morocco Tours’ planning and execution were first rate. Khalid, our driver, was great. He was knowledgeable and charming. He is an excellent driver and kept things on schedule without being over-bearing. The individual guides in particular locations were all good, although, as you’d expect, some were better than others. The accommodations were excellent, especially the riads.

In summary, I would unconditionally recommend Morocco Tours/ExperienceIt! Tours to anyone thinking about a trip to North Africa and would seriously consider taking another tour to a different country with your organization.

Are you looking to travel to Morocco on you own? Almost every week we get inquiries from potential travelers who are looking to visit Morocco on their own. Some of them are looking for a group tour to join, but many of them are interested to travel on a private Morocco tour.

Is it even possible?
Over the past 10 years, we have served a large number of single travelers. They like to travel by themselves because they can choose their own dates, their own itinerary, budget and much more. The cost of the single traveler tour is higher than our other tours mainly because there is no one else to split the cost with. Many of these travelers enjoy the relationship that they develop with their private driver and love Morocco.

What about single women?
At first I was very hesitant to offer private tour packages to single female travelers, but over the years I have changed my mind. Not because I think Morocco is a wonderful place for single females, but because I have such confidence in my drivers and guides that I don’t worry. I know that they will be taken care of and are in good hands.

How can I keep the price down?
The major downside of traveling alone is that the price is significantly higher than our normal tours like the Best of Morocco. There are a couple of ways to reduce the price! First, you could request our 3 star level tour package which includes some of the best 3 star riads in Morocco. The second way is to reduce the number of days with the private driver, however, this is not recommended. The driver is your escort and will make the tour go smoothly.

Find some friends…
If you still can’t afford to travel on a private Morocco tour, you might want to see if you can find some friends who can join you to make a small group. Then you can enjoy all that Morocco has to offer in the company of your friends.
